New Islington. Manchester's Millennium community.

Community

Millennium Communities are all about, well, communities.

We think that the best communities work when they are mixed - mixed income, mixed tenure, mixed age, mixed everything.

But we are also sensitive of the need to preserve the soul of the people who have lived here for generations.

The Government's Millennium Communities plan is an attempt to raise standards in the creation of sustainable new communities.

The existing 200 residents on the estate will, over time, become a minority as the new 2500 or so new residents move in to the area.

This change will be testing to manage.

But the essential requirements of any happy community are broadly the same, quality places and spaces, convenience - in the form of local shops and local transport links, enjoyment, excitement, delight, safety, security.

That's what we're trying to create here - we want New Islington, over time, to have everything you would expect to find in a good place - a mix of people, mix of incomes, mix of tenure, mix of uses, local shops, bars, restaurants... and more, much, much more...
