New Islington. Manchester's Millennium community.

The bigger picture

New Islington can't be seen in isolation.

To understand New Islington in its wider context is the basis for understanding the potential for future success. The whole of Manchester is changing.

The canals

The Rochdale Canal to the North was filled with concrete in the 70's when people believed it had no future. It is now being re-opened to make the cross border connection to Yorkshire. It will become a major leisure resource.

The Ashton Canal is part of the Cheshire Ring.

Hire boaters used to batten down the hatches when they motored through East Manchester and the Cardroom for fear of privacy - but Sportcity and the Commonwealth Stadium have changed all that. Both canals flank New Islington.

Sportcity

Built for the Commonwealth Games, a major educational and training facility for sporting endeavour and now home to Manchester City Football Club. Also home to the countries first Wallmart and home of the National Cycling Stadium.

The City Centre

The City Centre's getting its act together. Fuelled by an ambition to become a great European city. The last five years have seen significant change. Bars, restaurants, pubs, clubs, lofts, apartments, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges - change on a scale not seen since the industrial revolution.

The city is finally fulfilling its role as the capital of the region.

A tram

We all know how important a modern efficient public transport system is to the development of a city. We all know how well Metrolink works for the City and the areas it serves.

New Islington will have its own tram stop metres from its doorstep - and we think that's a great attraction.

A New East Manchester

Bold plans, burning ambition. East Manchester is shaking off its past.

Ancoats, Beswick, Openshaw and Miles Platting have a future thanks to the City Council's dedication, the North West Development Agency, the inequity and commitment of the local community and Brussels deep pockets.
